The “Ditch Queen” (abbreviated as “DQ”) is an underwater robot (ROV) specialized in the laying and inspection of submarine cables. It descends into the water from its mother ship, “Asahi,” and is connected by cable to the control room aboard the ship, where it is remotely operated.
Equipped with various sensors, it can detect cables even in turbid seabed conditions, draw in surrounding seawater, and jet it onto the seabed to create a trench around the cable, which is then laid beneath the seabed surface.
After laying, it uses its sensors to inspect the cable laying depth as completed work.

An underwater robot (ROV) specialized in laying and inspection
It descends into the water from its mother ship, “Asahi,” and is connected by cable to the control room on the ship for remote operation.
After laying, it can use equipped sensors to inspect the depth at which the cable is buried.
The strengths of “DQ”
It boasts the largest cable laying capacity in the country and is an ROV capable of burying cables at deep depths, a primary method of protecting submarine cables.
Due to its high jet water flow rate, it is designed with a special thruster layout to advance while excavating sand around the cable without being overcome by the reaction force.
If the cable laying depth does not reach the construction design value in one go, it can detect the already buried cable with sensors and excavate again, allowing the cable to be buried deeper.
Additionally, it can perform a variety of tasks underwater, such as rigging using a manipulator and removing foreign objects around the cable.
